With blue eyeshadow and star clips in her hair, Cassie Marin is serving looks. Going hand in hand with her intergalactic vibe, her electro pop music is out of this world.
BTS: Who/ what’s the inspiration behind your album Lil 5i5? What is the overall theme?
Marin: It sounds kind of silly to say, but I was the inspiration behind my album. It’s about the unorthodox way of how I grew up since the age 5. That’s why I put “5” for “sis”. It’s me encompassing different traumas and beautiful things since my life started drastically changing. It’s finding hope in yourself without looking for outside validation. That’s the best way to put it.
BTS: Are there any specific songs you’d like to talk about?
Marin: They’re all very sentimental to me. Off the top of my head, the most relevant since I released it is the title track, “Lil 5i5”. It really gives you the essence of what the album is about. It has an introduction like, hi I’m finally going to tell you about my life – I’ll give you the tea but you have to listen for it. That’s one of my favorite things about music. “Jungle Fetish” is another one. I noticed a lot of people are drawn to that one. It’s much darker – inspired by traumatic abuse that I underwent. I wanted to encompass even though people want you for your innocence, you can find your strength on stage, and no one will take that away from you. It’s so funny people are drawn to this one, it’s the darkest one.
BTS: What is your favorite song on your album and why?
Marin: If I had to pick a favorite right now, it’s probably “Jungle Fetish”. I’m still processing and it’s like healing magic. It still sounds like a happy song to me.
BTS: How would you describe your sound, overall?
Marin: That’s a good question. Maybe slightly futuristic? There’s something from the past about it, but also from the future about it. It’s like time travel music.
BTS: How has your life influenced your music this far?
Marin: I was influenced since day 1. My life is probably my primary form of inspiration. People will ask what artists inspired your music, but it’s really just my life. Like, I’m sitting in a coffee shop right now and listening to a random indie song I’ve never heard of – that’ll influence my music in a few days. Just life and it’s chaos.
BTS: What is your favorite part about being an artist?
Marin: Definitely learning about myself through my music. It’s like the greatest gift.
BTS: What can we expect from you next?
Marin: A lot, haha. I’ve been scheming – the whole time I’ve been working on this one, I’ve been working on another, and that’s already done. So more music, I’m very excited about that. I have a few things in cahoots so I can’t say just yet – definitely some surprises coming soon!
BTS: What are you most excited for in the future?
Marin: I’m excited to see how things turn out differently than how I imagine them to. I love when life surprises me. It’s like, you thought this is what you wanted but how about this.
BTS: What final message do you want to send to your fans and listeners?
Marin: Honestly, that this album taught me a lot of things, but the most important is to just enjoy things. There’s something to learn about yourself from every experience. Even when it seems miserable, just activate 5 senses and act like you’re 5 years old again.
The futuristic star is bound to go far. With more music on the way, we are on the edge of our seats!
