After dropping her latest single, “lovesick” awfultune took the time to talk to us here at BTS and let us know a bit more about her, her journey in music and what’s to come for the singer-songwriter.
Read on to find out more about awfultune’s start and what she has planned for the rest of the year.
Beyond The Stage: How did you get your start in music?
awfultune: I’ve been writing and singing little melodies ever since I can remember, but I professionally got my start in music on Soundcloud. I made an account in 2016 and started uploading covers of my favorite songs and it just took off from there.
BTS: How would you describe the awfultune sound to someone who hasn’t heard it before?
a: I really don’t think I truly have a singular sound at all. I can’t pinpoint one sound because I like to experiment with tons of them. I never feel comfortable doing the same thing each time. I’m always trying to change with each era. If I had to pick a sound though, I’d say my music is pretty bedroom pop/indie rock.
BTS: Who are some of your influences, musical or non-musical?
a: I am definitely a visual artist before anything. Every song I make has a visual for it in my head, whether I share it with the world or not. I really enjoy Billie Eilish and Melanie Martinez. I think they are just those types of artists that execute visual art really well. Even though our music sounds completely different, they do truly inspire me to push those boundaries in my music and be myself.
BTS: You released your latest single “lovesick” last month. What was the writing and recording process like for it?
a: “lovesick” was so much fun to write. I love when a song has a concept or theme I can play around with for hours. It was low-key one of the first times I got to showcase some light rapping too (haha) so that was fun. I really enjoyed recording it too. That hard-hitting dream-pop never fails to lift you up and push you to vibe no matter what.
BTS: The single has done incredibly well. How do you feel about its success and what does it represent as you kick off the new year with new music?
a: Thank you! I really think “lovesick” is a perfect start for the new era and completely represents the upbeat and energetic sound I’m going for right now. I’m really happy everyone is getting to hear it exactly the way I envisioned it all.
BTS: Do you have a favorite line from the song? If so, which and why?
a: “i really don’t give a fuck about the money / in your bank account, just tryna find some real / love and really make it really count”
I think this line is my favorite because it’s such a true statement to me and paints an accurate picture of what I’m looking for in my love life. I don’t care how much money you’re flexing, if you can’t be real with me and make me feel light in my heart and on my feet, I’m not interested!
BTS: What are you most excited about when it’s safe to play and go to shows again?
a: Honestly… would love to just do shows in general! I haven’t performed in-front of super large crowds, just virtually, and I’d love to experience that in the real world. I just can’t wait to sing my heart out and see everyone’s faces
BTS: What artists have you been listening to the most during quarantine?
a: Definitely a lot of Ween. I also have been really into Sir Chloe lately! Ashnikko’s DEMIDEVIL record is to die for. You can actually listen to my playlist on my Spotify filled with my favorite tracks to get a good idea of what I’m listening to lately. I update the tracks to my current vibe each month!
BTS: What does 2021 have in store for you?
a: Who knows! I think the beauty of the new year is that it’s such a good time to really reflect on life, get rid of what’s not good for you anymore, and stay dedicated and optimistic. I guess if I were to jump into the future for a second… I’m really looking forward to sharing new music. Possibly even music videos? I guess we will see.
