Foo Fighters are hitting airwaves with another single! “No Son of Mine” reminds listeners that age is just a number; Dave Grohl & Company can still play fast and heavy like any young garage band. This is the second single released leading up to their upcoming album Medicine at Midnight coming this February. This song had a high bar set by their previous single “Shame, Shame” which made its debut on SNL the night President-elect Joe Biden defeated Donald Trump in the electoral college. With politics set aside, Grohl once again proved that he can still scream like it’s 1995.
The band structures their songs like a Lincoln Log creation; there are layers of instruments and it’s noticeable if one piece is removed. The song starts with a powerful, descending guitar riff and Grohl singing the first verse, then the other instruments come in one by one. One of the band’s strongest attributes has been the use of three guitarists in their songs. It allows for an array of sounds to bounce off one another without becoming overwhelming. The guitars are loud, but the drums never take a backseat.
Taylor Hawkins lays down a beat with a good build-up and a nostalgic sound to previous Foo tracks. Without vocals, it’s especially noticeable through the drums that this is a Foo Fighters song. The bridge is the highlight of the song. The electricity flowing through the jam session shows that these guys are still having fun playing music.
The lyrics in this song prove the band’s influences of blues and ‘70s hard rock. Vocals have never been the main attraction for Foo songs and Grohl has acknowledged this in the past. However, Grohl brings a special energy to the lyrics and is well-supported by backing vocals. Their melody echoes a portion of the main guitar riff and almost mimics a fourth guitar layer. Their last album Concrete & Gold (2017) had a major improvement on backing vocals and it’s nice to hear them reprised for this track. The instrumentals sound familiar to the band’s past album Wasting Light (2011) yet with the improvements picked up from Concrete & Gold (2017).
“No Son of Mine” is one that is bound to be played live someday and will excite the crowd. The strong chemistry between the band is still thriving and anticipates fans for a great tenth studio album. Medicine at Midnight is set to drop in February 2021.
