Farmer’s Wife is a band from Austin, Texas that holds all of these attributes. Their newest song “Season of the Witch” is a barn burner. It’s loud, eery and scratchy. Farmer’s Wife also sticks to their Texas roots, which perhaps sets them apart from other loud rock bands writing sinister songs. It is very clear that Farmer’s Wife is making music inspired by the lives they’ve experienced in their home state. Singer Molly Masson rips on vocals, as do her bandmates, guitarists Jude Hill and Derek Ivy, bassist Jacob Masson and drummer Jaelyn Valero.
In this ongoing political turmoil bogging the United States, Texas is a place stricken with life-altering conservative policy. It’s a state with a bleak future for certain diverse ethnic populations, trans people and women. There are beacons of hope, though. Art scenes like Austin’s are among the most creatively rich places anywhere in the world. Bands like Farmer’s Wife can speak their truths. Their most popular song is a dig at Texas’ ultra right-wing conservative Governor Greg Abbott. It’s called “Greg Abbott’s Maxi Pad” and was written in 2022.
Now, Farmer’s Wife is on the road playing their sinister, politically motivated brand of thrilling rock to audiences all over the US. They just completed tour dates alongside noise-rock legends Cloud Nothings and Australian band Armlock. Farmer’s Wife still has several headlining shows left this year. Scroll down to see which cities they’re playing in and to purchase tickets. Here are the best images from their recent sold-out shows in Chicago, Illinois at the legendary Empty Bottle.
