Over the last several months, 22-year-old singer, songwriter, and producer Jeremy Zucker has made a name for himself in the pop world with his breakout hit “All The Kids Are Depressed,” which has nearly 30 million streams on Spotify. While his career may still be in its early stages, Zucker has made it clear on his new EP summer that he’s ready to start the next chapter with his music. After graduating from Colorado College with a degree in molecular biology earlier this year, Zucker decided to change his path and focus on his music. summer is a testament to what it’s like to be young in the summer – from feeling isolated to overthinking the future – he doesn’t hold back on the honesty.
The EP opens with the lead single “comethru,” which discusses feeling lost and alone during the summer. The song is one that everyone can relate to – it presents listeners with the idea of finding balance in your life when the absence of balance can make you feel isolated sometimes. It’s the perfect, honest start to summer and does a fantastic job of setting up the listener for what’s to come in the rest of the songs. The second track, “selfish” is a fun and warm song that’s a reminiscent combination of his past EPs Idle and glisten. “selfish” is the most up-beat song on the EP, and is the ultimate driving-around-with-your-windows-down song.
“thinking 2 much” is the second single off summer and is easily the standout track on the EP. It features a spoken word verse by EDM artist EDEN, which perfectly compliments the message of the song. The track is laid back and incredibly simple, which makes its placement on the EP perfect. It provides listeners with a break in the middle of listening that gives you an opportunity to breathe before continuing on with the last two songs. The fourth track, “desire” is the perfect follow up to “thinking 2 much”. The transition between the two songs is effortless, and the production on them perfectly compliments one an other. Finally, “firefly” closes out the EP and is the perfect summer song – it’s simplicity and effortlessness will leave listeners wanting more by the time it ends.
From start to finish, summer is the perfect end of summer EP. It takes the listener back through warmer weather, but also prepares them for what’s to come as the leaves start to change color and the temperatures begins to drop. Zucker captured the emotions of what it’s like to be young in the summer perfectly, making the EP about as relatable as it can get. summer is an incredibly cohesive body of work, and will easily become a quintessential soundtrack for future summers.
