Expecting to start 2021 off fresh with a new Drake album? Same here. But we are all going to have to wait a little while longer.
Originally slated for a January release, the Toronto native announced on his Instagram story that Certified Lover Boy will be delayed as a result of his surgery and rehab.
For those wondering what surgery he is referring to, Drake posted on his Instagram story in October a picture of him lying in bed with his right leg in a cast. Nothing has been official but many have speculated that he suffered a torn right meniscus. As a result, he is focused on recovering first and then working on the album.
The 34-year-old rapper first announced Certified Lover Boy back in August 2020 when he premiered the song and music video for his lead single “Laugh Now Cry Later” featuring Lil Durk. The music video featured many star-studded faces, including cameos from NBA superstar Kevin Durant and NFL stars Odell Beckham Jr. and Marshawn Lynch.
The single is sitting at 379.8 million streams on Spotify with 223.6 million views on YouTube.
Further building the hype around Certified Lover Boy, Drake collaborated with Nike in October to create album merchandise. Merch included t-shirts, hoodies, socks and more. They quickly sold out but you can still buy them at resale here.
2020 has been a productive year for the OVO rapper, dropping Dark Lane Demo Tapes in May while lending features on tracks such as “Mr. Right Now” with 21 Savage and one of the hottest tracks of the year, “POPSTAR”, with DJ Khaled. So he has been keeping listeners something to jam to while waiting for his next album.
As to when Certified Lover Boy will officially release, no one knows. It is for sure not dropping in January so we can anticipate seeing the album within the next few months. In the meantime, we want to wish Drake a speedy recovery.
