If you’ve been looking for your next music obsession, there’s no need to look further. Hailing from both sides of the Atlantic, The Backfires are who you need to listen to before they blow up. The fresh rock band, comprised of Alex Gomez, Harry Ruprecht and Matt Walter, dropped their debut EP Consider The Backfires and we definitely consider them a new-found treasure.
Newly formed in 2019, the trio began their career but really took flight in 2020 getting to work on writing and recording. Starting a band in general can be tough, but starting a band in the middle of a global pandemic surely has it’s obstacles. Despite not being able to truly be together, like many, video chat became their best friend with Gomez and Ruprecht in the UK and Walter in New York. The time during quarantine actually gave the band more time to write and reflect on what they truly wanted to be as a band.
Taking inspiration with songwriting and production from bands like Arctic Monkeys, Catfish and the Bottlemen and Oasis, and establishing their own sound. The bands’ six-track EP comes after the release of their 2020 debut single “Anything” along with their follow-up single “Anything.” The guitar-driven, soul-searching EP continues with “Going Gets Easy,” which the band released a simple yet favorable music video today.
Relationship and love-focused “Preoccupied” and “Falling” continue the perfectly composed EP while coming to an end with “Before The Sunrise” tying the knot in an upbeat bow. Inspired by Gomez’ own life, the 18-minute collection transports you to feel like the main character of a coming-of-age film, blasting music with your friends on late drives or running down the streets of London (pre-Covid of course). It’s a piece of work you truly get lost in.
The Backfires are a band that should not just be considered, but acknowledged and recognized as indie-rock music’s next big success ready to take over.
