This week’s artist: Hoodie Allen
Steven Markowitz, better known as his stage name Hoodie Allen, is an independent American hip-hop artist, singer and rapper.
Hoodie Allen is really the one exception to our “rap” music favorites. We first heard of Hoodie from a friend in 2011 who was screaming at us to check out his music. We reluctantly gave in and surprisingly we were blown away. The first song We heard was Moon Bounce and it was refreshing. The song was on his free mixtape called Leap Year that he had recently released at the time. Everybody loves free music.
After Leap Year, he released his EP, All American, that reached #1 album on iTunes charts. Basically, the EP is pretty amazing. It’s catchy, innovative, and like a breath of fresh air. It’s music you can dance to and work out to. Take a quick listen to one of his singles off of the record, No Faith in Brooklyn.
His most recent work is an album called Crew Cuts. First off, the album is FREE. Quickly download the album right off his website here. It’s not just the music that makes me love Hoodie Allen, it is Steven Markowitz himself. He decided to release the album for free for his fans because he thought it was something the fans deserved for their non-stop support. It’s amazing to me how down to Earth he is, which I find to be surprising for being ‘a rapper’. It’s a trait that makes him outstanding and different from other upcoming rappers.
Songs that you need to listen to:
You might get to see him around soon because rumor has it Hoodie and Brian Dales from The Summer Set have asked him to spit a rhyme on a track, along with Michael from Allstar Weekend who has also sparked interest in Hoodie Allen’s talent. It’s rewarding watching as Hoodie Allen rose and started from the bottom trying to spread word of his free mixtape to selling sold out shows and getting attention from many other artists. I promise you won’t be disappointed and hope that you end up as obsessed as I am! Keep your eye on him, he’s going to make it big.
