Chicago Ideas Week (CIW) is all about innovating the future and learning new things. And when Beyond The Stage stepped into SoundScape Studios on October 12, the entire environment fostered brand new ideas. Home of some of where some of the biggest names in music recorded some of their biggest hits, SoundScape Studios has been a heavy force in the Chicago music scene for more than a few years. During our CIW session, we had a chance to explore more about SoundScape, how to remix a popular song, and what makes them different than most recording studios.
Take a look at the top charts and some names you recognize might have recorded at SoundScape. Flashback to The Neighbourhood making a quick stop in Chicago during their last tour and SoundScape comes into play. On an off day, The NBHD recorded “Honest,” which was created specifically for the newest Spiderman movie at the Chicago studios, working with their owner and producer. Other names you might recognize from the studio’s client list include Chance The Rapper, Vic Mensa and Action Bronson, all who have recorded at SoundScape in the past.
We had the chance to attend a Remix Session with OddCouple, one of SoundScape’s many producers, for Chicago Ideas Week and it was an experience in itself. Stepping into the studios, we were immediately hit with the familiar beats of hip-hop music, but when the small group of CIW attendees sat down to learn how a song is remixed, we were all shocked to find out that OddCouple had chosen “What Do You Mean” by Justin Bieber. OddCouple showed us how he slows tracks down or speeds them up, adds bigger drops and build ups to create a completely different song than what is playing on the radio. We added different beats to create a new version of “What Do You Mean” and over the course of two hours, we all found ourselves nodding our heads in agreement.
Keep checking our blog for more CIW coverage as we unfold more of Chicago’s music industry perspective.
