Canadian singer Charlotte Cornfield spent most of 2020 spent inside her house. But instead of spending the year solely watching TV or baking bread, the artist dedicated most of her time alone to music. Her time in near-solitude proved fruitful, ultimately culminating in her newest album, Highs in the Minuses, released today.
In contrast to Highs in the Minuses’ lyrical creation, the making of the total album was a much more social and collaborative process— Cornfield was sure of that. In 2019, when the artist released their album The Shape of Your Name, the process was an isolated one. Most of the songs were written alone, most of the instruments were played by Cornfield and the recording of the album happened over an extended amount of time. The Isolation felt counterintuitive to the music scene she grew up with.
This time around, Cornfield was sure to include others in the album’s creation, recruiting bassist Alexandra Levy and drummer Liam O’Neill. On the recording experience, which only took five days, Cornfield says, “I knew everyone was coming in prepared, but I was really excited to see what was going to happen spontaneously, and those ideas that happened really quickly. It was so much about trusting who I was with and trying to capture the immediacy of the emotions in the songs.”
In support of the album, the tracks “Headlines” and “Partner in Crime” were released as singles, receiving recognition from a variety of publications, including NPR Music and Stereogum. The singles work in tandem, “Headlines” focusing on the feelings of anxiety and “Partner in Crime” expressing the sentiments when entering a new, healthy relationship.
