Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band are back and better than ever with a new song that not only pays tribute to lost bandmates but proves the group’s relationship with music is just as strong. The song is titled “Ghosts” and is the second single on the singer’s upcoming album Letter to You. It is evident that this song takes a narrative approach to the experiences of being in a band. A fundamental part of Bruce’s artistry has been the strong relationship he has had to both rock music and his bandmates. Evidently, when losing any member of this rock “family” to illness or time the result is devastating.
The lyricism is metaphoric in its allusion to bandmates Bruce has lost throughout his lifetime. This is particularly apparent in when he writes “I turn up the volume and let the spirits be my guide.” Springsteen has noted these lyrics as referencing the promise to carry on the legacy of rock music in the future.
The song was recorded at Springsteen’s home in Colts Neck, New Jersey. Springsteen has also said how the entire recording session was live with the entire E Street band. The band hasn’t been featured on an album with the singer since 2014 with their album High Hopes. He said that the entire album was recorded in just five days. It’s clear that the band rekindled the old flame to provide us with their signature sound we all know and love. “Letter to You” comes out on October 23rd.
The lyric video for “Ghosts” was just released and was directed by Thom Zinny. The band is featured throughout the video both in modern day and in the past- a reference to the changing times unified by a timeless love for performing.
