After weeks of teasers and sneak-peaks, Brent Faiyaz has finally released his highly anticipated sophomore album, WASTELAND. A 19-track collection with features from Alicia Keys, Tyler The Creator, Drake and The Neptunes has made quite an impression on the charts as it’s already reached #1 on Apple Music within hours of its midnight release.
Tailoring to his cult-like following, Faiyaz brings the heat with an album full of passion, confidence and self-reflection. The Maryland-native worked with Raphael Saadiq and The-Dream to help produce this album that is inspired by the current issues that have been brought to light by the pandemic. Faiyaz tells Rolling Stone,
“For me, Wasteland is just what I felt like we living in with this post-pandemic cluster-fuck of emotions. You got motherfuckers taking women’s rights away. There’s just so much shit going on in the world at large. But I still get caught up in the vices. I still want to buy some shit. I still want to fuck bitches. I still want to get wasted every other night. So I’m gonna make songs about at least how I feel in the moment so I can figure out what the fuck I really want to do.”
Faiyaz continues to show growth with his R&B sound by using honest feelings to inspire bold lyrics and by outsourcing producers like NO I.D., L3GION and Jordan Waré. Unlike his debut album, Sonder Son, and his EP, Fuck The World, this album consists of skits and an interlude to create a sentimental storytelling project.
Altogether, this project is just the beginning for Faiyaz. As he begins to cultivate and fine-tune his sound, Faiyaz pushes confidence and flair into the modern R&B scene.
