For Ben Platt, it’s been an eventful year. Not only is his starring role as Evan in “Dear Evan Hansen” currently playing on the big screen, but his second album Reverie was released back in August. In 2019, Platt put out his debut album Sing To Me Instead, which was loved by many with his raw lyrics and beautiful melodies. His flawless runs and hints of musical theater influence are easily recognizable, and with Reverie fans have a lot to be excited about.
The album has a total of 13 songs with more electronic elements rather than acoustic. Like his last album, it falls under the pop category. “imagine” and “happy to be sad” were released as singles before the album came out, giving us a sneak peek at the magic Platt had in store for us.
Platt has been promoting his song “I wanna love you but I don’t”, which he recently put out a music video for. The lyrics tell the story of not feeling the way you had initially hoped to feel towards someone.
As expected, the album takes us through a rollercoaster of emotion with themes of love, heartbreak and childhood. It includes a combination of upbeat songs like “childhood bedroom” and “chasing you” to ballads like “carefully” and “dark times”.
There are reoccurring interludes titled “king of the world pt.1”, “king of the world pt. 2” and “king of the world pt. 3” that break the album up into a beginning, middle and end. This can be compared to the sequence of a musical theater show, which is no coincidence.
