On November 8, 2022, beabadoobee rocked the stage at Emo’s in Austin, TX. This 22-year-old Filipino-British singer-songwriter racked up 1.7 million Instagram followers and 10.7 million monthly Spotify listeners after her song with Powfu “death bed (coffee for your head)” went viral on TikTok. The first leg of her tour started in Australia and New Zealand in September, now carrying through North America until the beginning of December.
On this stop of the tour, Atlanta band Lowertown kicked things off. While they have a bassist and drummer on tour with them, the band consists of vocalist and guitar duo Olivia Osby and Avshalom Weinberg. A blend of electronic and lo-fi, with a fair amount of screaming, heavy bass, and jumping around, Lowertown got the crowd going on this Tuesday night. Heads banging everywhere. Their punkish sound scratched the angsty itch that’s needed attention since 2010. Vocalist Olivia Osby was quiet and moody in demeanor when speaking to the crowd, but then let out the most guttural and loud tone when singing. Avshalom Weinberg took the reins, singing one song, in between some killer guitar solos and jumping around the stage. Check out their new song Antibiotics.
After Lowertown’s 45 minute set, beabadoobee took the stage. Everyone in the crowd took a collective three steps forward to get as close as possible, not wanting to miss one second of the performance. When listening to her at home, beabadoobee has the kind of music you listen to while crying in bed, thinking of the people who wronged you and journaling about it. But in person, you’re throwing that journal across the room and kicking over trash cans, ready to give your ex the finger and be the badass independent person you are. Live, her music hits harder. Something about those heavy guitar strums beating along with your heart in a dark venue just amplifies the music.
beabadoobee’s North American tour continues through December, ending in Boston. After that, you can catch her in select cities opening for Taylor Swift on the Midnights tour.
