There’s a lot of things that draw us to a song. Whether it’s the lyrics, melody, beat, instrumentals, etc. every now and then we come across a song that we listen to over and over again. Our staff shared some of the songs we’ve had on repeat:
“Where’s The Catch (feat. André 3000)” – James Blake
You may know André 3000 from his days in Outkast or maybe for his recent stunt playing double flute in the airport, but this year’s release with James Blake is definitely a bit darker and shows a more complex side to the rapper. Blake, who’s known for his complex, R&B turned electronic beats, collaborated to create an entire rap-based conversation around paranoia and depression, spiking an incredible conversation in the music industry. The track has an incredible looping thematic lyric, “where’s the catch?” that draws you in, evaluating the track from beginning to end. – Addie Whelan, Editor In Chief
“Yes I’m Changing” – Tame Impala
I’ve been in love with this song since it was released 4 years ago (which means I’ve had it on repeat for the last 4 years, whoops). I knew that it was going to be one of my all time favorites the second I heard the opening notes. The drum beat and synths have a great nostalgic quality to them, which kind of makes me feel like I’m in an indie coming of age movie every time I listen to this song. This song is all about learning to accept change in your life, so that sentiment paired with the melodies really gives this song a very addicting feeling of freedom. – Gina Scarpino, Managing Editor
“Apologize” – OneRepublic
I love OneRepublic and this is my favorite song by them. Honestly, it’s one of my absolute favorite songs ever. The slow beginning draws me in, then it launches into the chorus that is just full of so much passion and expression. That just really takes the track to new heights for me. It’s just a classic, and I’ll always come back to it. -Lauren Klonowski, Deputy Editor
“I Dare You” – The Regrettes
It’s no secret that I love The Regrettes to the ends of the Earth and back. This year, they announced their second album and released some amazing tracks but “I Dare You” was one that really struck a chord with me. The overall vibe of the song just makes me happy and want to dance! And we can’t forget about the amazing music video that is just so visually appealing! I recently found out that another one of my favorite artists, Julian Casablancas, helped co-write the song which makes it even more special to me! – Chelsea Gresh, Assistant Photo Editor
“Sleepless Nights” – ayokay, Nightly
I had recently been going through a Nightly fix with the release of their latest EP, Talk You Down, and had forgotten about this song until I heard it in my friend’s car. Before I knew it, the song had found its way into my daily listening. It’s infectious beat and lyrics are perfect for every occasion, and is especially best suited for nighttime summer drives. – Joe Hernandez, Digital Content Manager
“Anna” – The Menzingers
I’ve been getting more into The Menzingers the past few months and melodically, “Anna” is in my current top five songs out of their entire discography- or what I’ve listened to so far. The stylistic evolution of this band’s sound continues to mature and they know how to keep that evolution tasteful. – Grace Kolpack, Contributing Writer
“Whimper”- Microwave
This track by Microwave has such a relaxing, leading into hard hitting, instrumental, with vocals that follow. Lyrically, Microwave has been on their A-Game for a while but this song really takes the cake. It’s raw, honest and powerful. I can’t stop listening to this track and I bet you won’t be able to either. – Stone Fenk, Contributing Photographer
“Baby Blue” – Rence
I’m obsessed with this song – I listen to it at least 5 times a day. His music makes me want to hang out with friends, have a bonfire, and just enjoy life. Makes me nostalgic for memories I have yet to create. – Nicolita Bradley, Contributing Photographer
“Ocean Breathes Salty” – Modest Mouse
The album that this song comes from is about 15 years old, and this song has been on repeat for me lately probably because I’ve been especially nostalgic about simpler times these days. It’s funny because I forgot how embedded this band’s music has been in my life these past 15 years until I sit down and start listening to them again, I discover songs I had forgotten about and am transported to years ago and to different times in my life. – Bernadette Castillo, Contributing Photographer
“Back” – Myles Parrish
This Bay Area artists is one of my favorites, always so hard working and humble for being independent. “Back” was released earlier this year and is still a single that gets you hyped everytime. A beat that will definitely get you dancing and first verse with the iconic lines “got a freaky lil’ thing, is she bopular?” that will definitely get stuck in your head. it’s the perfect summer party song to get the party going. – Ivy Sandoval, Contributing Writer
“7 Years” – Ari Afsar
This song came out a few months ago on Ari’s debut EP, “Somewhere I Thought I’d Be”. Ari is working on a musical and recently performed it in New York, since I couldn’t go I started re-listening to her EP and fell in love with this song again. The song is about how you can think you’ve grown up and got it all figured out when really you’re still young and learning about life. I personally relate to that and i think it’s something everyone eventually does realizes they can relate to. With the catchy tune and her one shot music video it’s one I Haven’t stopped listening to since I reheard it again. – Marissa Sandoval, Contributing Photographer
“No Going Back” – Yuno
I’m not entirely sure how I came across Yuno, but after one listen of “No Going Back”, I was hooked. Yuno’s blend of rock, pop and borderline psychedelic elements in this song coupled with his soft and smooth vocals reminded me of the likes of Tame Impala. A bit of research revealed that Yuno operates every step of production himself, he even designs his own album artwork – a true creative! – Quinn Beaupré, Contributing Photographer
“Self Taught” – Brother Ali
I’m a sucker for old school hip hop beats, so it’s no surprise that this Brother Ali track has been in constant rotation as of late. Released in 2004, Ali’s flow and lyricism in this song have held up quite nicely over the last 15 years. “Self Taught” takes a look at Brother Ali’s rise to success, and the adversity he has had to overcome in the past in order to make it where he is today. The flute sample partnered with a heavy drum beat make it nearly impossible to not bob your head while listening. – Quinn Beaupré, Contributing Photographer
Wrong – John.k
I really love this song. The first time I heard it I wasn’t sure about it but then I listened a second time and became obsessed! The beat is catchy and I often catch myself just dancing by myself whenever I play it in the car or alone in my room. I probably scream the lyrics way too loud and bop my head way too hard. I can’t help it, it’s just one of those songs.. I really get attached to songs I relate to in a way and some of the lyrics in this song I do relate too. They tell a story and I like music that does that. Sam Aneed- Contributing Writer
