5 Seconds of Summer drummer Ashton Irwin released his debut solo single “Skinny Skinny” at midnight on Thursday. It is the first song from his upcoming debut album Superbloom, which will be released on October 23. He also released a music video to accompany “Skinny Skinny.” It is a creative glimpse into his inner thoughts about his struggles with body image, especially body dysmorphia.
In a tweet about the song, he said “We must fight against a common darkness that shadows our ability to live truthfully, to live without self doubt, and without self destruction and love ourselves for what we are.” It is not meant to serve as just a song about his struggles, but to the body image issues many people face.

Following the release on YouTube, he shared online that a restriction of some sort was put on the “Skinny Skinny” music video, making it unsearchable, and he asked for YouTube to make it “searchable to the world.” He further shared in a separate tweet on the thread that YouTube “shouldn’t be able to micro manage and filter people’s art.”
In his Twitter announcement on September 23 about Superbloom, Irwin shared that the album is personal and explores his mind and thoughts about his current walk of life. He also released an image of the 10 tracks.
Even through all the excitement, many were left wondering what this meant for the future of 5SOS. Will they go on an 18-month hiatus that turns into five years like One Direction?
Well, for now, Irwin has eased our minds by sharing his gratefulness for his band to allow him to make music outside of it.
See the tweet below.
I’m ridiculously excited to share this with you, it feels like this record has been over a decade in the making. It brings me the greatest joy of all that I am in a band that allows me to create freely inside and outside of it. I can’t wait for you to hear it.

This will be a new and exciting chapter for Irwin and 5SOS fans. His openness about his struggles will hopefully help many people through similar times and feelings. As the beginning of his solo era, he has definitely made a statement with “Skinny Skinny,” and leaves listeners excited for what is next to come.
