Pittsburgh natives, A Summer High are this week’s Artist of the Week! From traveling alongside the nationwide 5 Seconds of Summer tour to meetings with Spotify and huge labels, A Summer High are definitely a band for your summer playlists.
Get to know the band below!
1. Introduce yourselves!
Hey, we are A Summer High from Pittsburgh Pennsylvania!
2. How did you guys get your start together?
Luke and Mason grew up close to each other. They met at a local show and decided to form a band. They then met James who is from Minnesota, after a few weeks of back and forth he moved to Pittsburgh. A few months later, Noah (lukes little brother) joined the band and A Summer High was born.
3. Where did the band name come from?
It’s actually a lyrics from the song “Miles Away” by the Maine. The Maine is one of our most creative influences, so it’s pretty fitting.
4. How has being from Pittsburgh shaped your style and experience as a band?
The local scene was amazing to grow up in. We are all small town people, and growing up with other bands and playing shows for our friends taught us a lot about what being in a band actually meant. Taking it one step further and signing a deal, touring, and landing bigger collaborations is something we’ve been very fortunate with. Retaining the support from our local friends and showing them our support is super important. Pittsburgh is special like that.
5. How would you describe your style go somebody who is just hearing about you guys?
A creative mix of catchy pop tunes and aggressive punk. We really tried to form the sound we grew up on with our own modern sound and it came out with a really nice twist.
6. How did you decide to table across the country on the 5SOS tour last year?
It was very spontaneous. We were sitting in Mason’s living room just a about a week after meeting James for the first time and the idea came up. It sounded crazy, but the opportunity was to big to pass up. That decision really kickstarted our growth and since then we’ve been lucky enough to turn a few supporters into a massive fan base.
7. How has that experience influenced you a year later?
We still look back on that tour a lot. We were sleeping in a small car every night, driving to shows. Looking back on that to see where we are now is incredibly humbling. We’ve grown so much and the fans have just become more supportive. We’re now riding to our own headline shows across the country in a massive sprinter van. It’s crazy, and the sole reason we’re able to do it is the support from our fan base.
8. What was the process like while creating your new EP, “Pretty Little Liar”?
We started off writing songs last august. It came a long way. We wrote around 30 or 40 songs and most didn’t make the cut. After we solidified the songs we wanted to track, we hit the studio and really brought our ideas to life.
9. Favorite song on the EP?
“Pretty Little Liar” is definitely our favorite. That’s the main reason we named the EP after that song. It’s fun, catchy, and easy to relate to. Stoked to play it on tour.
10. What does the rest of 2017 and beyond have in store for A Summer High?
We hope to hit the road again to visit some new markets in the fall, We have some really cool collaborations in mind, and we’re going to settle down in the winter to write a lot more. We have no intentions of slowing down. We’re taking over kids!
