Hailey Knox dives deep into the inspiration behind her EP “Awkward,” in today’s segment of her Artist of the Week series. If you missed the first two parts of Hailey’s Artist of the Week feature, you can find them here.
“Awkward” was written as a response to the people who bothered and nagged me as a teen. At times, I felt like my parents were constantly watching over me and not giving me enough freedom. I love my Mom and Dad but I think any teen can relate to having an overprotective parent at one point or another. I explained to them that the overall message of the song is “trust me, I got this” as opposed to “Leave me alone Mom and Dad!”
A lot of personal experiences inspired the EP : my struggles as a teen, my feelings of self doubt, my relationships and all the weird feelings/situations I found myself in!
It’s funny, when I wrote “Awkward” with my writing team, “the dreaded us”, it felt as if we were ranting about our lives and those who bother us! I never thought people would connect to it as much as they do! We weren’t sure if it would make it as a single, but as we developed the production and lyrics, it grew on all of us.
We would meet quite often at the studio in NYC for writing sessions. I spent a lot of time traveling from home to NYC and back on the train over the past year.
