Our Austin-based Artist of the Week, Nominee, dropped an EP at the beginning of 2017 and we haven’t been able to take it off repeat since then. Drag Me Out, the sophomore EP release from the band, tackles the heavy topics of mental health that are part of the frontman’s everyday life. Lead singer Chris says in the end, he and the band just want “anyone dealing with similar issues to know that they’re not alone”. But let’s get down to the music.
We’d have to say that our must download tracks are “Prints”, “White Water” and the title track “Drag Me Out”. Each song is vaguely laced with a call to action and brings a light to issues that too often go without being talked about. Nominee’s strong rock influences come through the entire EP with hints of punk, giving a tangible sound to those feelings. Rounding out the EP comes the subdued song, “You Came With The Sun”. The acoustic guitar-based track contrasts the majority of the songs while still nailing the essence of the entire EP. It’s a full circle release that shows the real ups and downs of any type of struggle, but still manages to entertain the listener the whole time.
To make it brief, Drag Me Out is certainly an important piece of music. But it’s also well done and musically appealing while being emotionally raw. And if having those songs on repeat isn’t enough for you, check out the band on their U.S. tour this spring, full dates below!
