In their final Artist of the Week post, Anson reflects on navigating the music industry. Check it out below:
What a jungle we live in. We live in an era where technology is readily abundant, social media is deeply ingrained in our daily routine, and we are constantly overstimulated by everyone and everything trying to get our attention. While in 2017 it may be
harder to get your music noticed by fans because of oversaturation of the
market and low barrier of entry, I feel like the present gives every
up and coming artist an open forum to make opportunity for
themselves. The opportunity to plant their flag in the ground and call a little
bit of this world theirs and share their art with the world.
In 2017, you don’t need a label or a million dollars to break an
artist anymore. It just takes good songs, branding, and a little
marketing to get off the ground. From my experience in the music
industry, navigating through it is a very treacherous course and
every move should be greatly analyzed. There are a lot of scammers, shitty
people, and vultures in this industry. Some think of music as a
commodity and it being your art is irrelevant to them. For them,
it’s a numbers game, how attractive you are, and what’s the latest
flavor of the week.
My best advice I could give about this industry is find
people who love your music for what it is. Find people who aren’t
trying to take advantage of your situation and truly believe in what
you have to put out to this world. Don’t sign to a label just because it’s the only offer and the only way you see everything going down. There have been so many success stories happening in the recent decade of independent artists making a living and getting huge
because the power is now in the hands of the most important people in this
industry, the fans. Be true to your art and they will come. Keep on
writing those hits that make your heart pound.
