We had the opportunity to talk with alt-rock band Anson as our Artist of the Week. Check out their Q&A below:
Can you introduce yourself for people who don’t know you?
Hi everyone! We are ANSON, an independent three-piece alternative
rock band from Los Angeles, CA! – Anson
How would you describe your sound?
I would say we are, what’s a good way to describe it? I would say
we’re bringing back your favorite emo
alternative rock music, and if you like what you hear get ready for
more. -George
My biggest influence is Brand New, I always have Devil and God or
Deja Entendu in my weekly rotation. But
lately, I have listened to a lot of Muscle like Origin of Symmetry
and Black Holes and Revelations. Matt Bellamy
is one of my favorite musicians of all time, it’s unfair how
amazing he is at everything. – Zack
What about your nonmusical influences?
Hmm, I would have to say I am heavily influenced by my day to day
interactions I have with people in life, Rick
and Morty, and nature. – Anson
Congratulations on your new EP! Can you go through what the process
was like to create it?
Thank you! The EP was written and recorded over a period of two
years. It was a very long process because I
was searching for the right sound. Writing the songs for this EP
took a lot out of me. I opened emotionally about
topics I didn’t want to talk about before and finally faced my
inner demons. – Anson
What do you hope listeners get from your EP/music?
I want the listeners to see the journey. The journey of self-doubt,
fear of taking a step out of the shadows, being
afraid to let go of toxic relationships. I want them to get that
life is a journey and that it is okay to not be okay.
– George
What is something you would like to achieve by the end of the year?
By the end of the year, I would like to be a better songwriter than
I am now. It’s kind of vague but I think it’s
important to see growth as a musician. – Zack
What is your dream collaboration?
My dream collaboration would be with Danger Mouse. He did such
amazing work with Gnarls Barkley, Portugal.
the man and The Black Keys, I would love to see what we could pull
together. – Zack
What is your songwriting process like?
My songwriting process usually just involves me, my guitar, and a
notepad. I try to write something every day.
Even if it isn’t a full song. My rule is I try to write when I
feel like it for one hour every day. If nothing comes of it, I
go on with my day and do other things. You can’t force
songwriting. You gotta be vulnerable and honest with
yourself to get something that doesn’t feel forced or sucks. So my
main thing is just to let the creativity flow.
There are no mistakes. Just see what happens. – Anson
Anson, what was it like for you to go from a solo project to
creating a full band?
It was a breath of fresh air. I always wanted to be in a band, and I
am very grateful to have George and Zack
making music with me. It feels great to have like-minded friends who
want this as bad as you do. – Anson
Fun Questions!
Coffee or Tea? What does a venti caramel frap with extra caramel
count as? – George
Ice cream or cake?
Cake simply because I’m lactose intolerant and I’ve officially
decided to stop punishing myself by eating it. – Zack
Current obsession song?
My current obsession song is “Same Blood” by The Academy Is. I
have listened to all their albums but always
skipped over Santi. Now that they haven’t made music in years and
I have been craving their sound I’ve gone
back to the album and love it! – Anson
Favorite T.V. show?
Rick and Morty has to be my current obsession. – George
Ocean or Pool?
How is this even a question? Obviously the ocean! – Zack
