This week’s Artist of the Week is pop-singer/song-writer Ali Brustofski. From YouTube to musical theater, Ali’s done it all! Learn more about her below.

1. How did you get started in performing and writing music?
I started off doing musical theater when I was 8, but I was always writing down poems and ideas. When I started high school I realized that I’d rather work on my own music than play a part.
2. Who are some of your biggest musical influences?
So many! I love Rihanna, Katy Perry, Christina Aguilera, and Amy Winehouse to name a few.
3. What’s your current go-to summer playlist?
It honestly changes on a weekly basis! I love “Starving” by Hailee Steinfeld and “Cold Water” by Justin Bieber at the moment. I’m always updating my playlists on Spotify – my “NOW” one is always filled with what I’m currently jamming to! https://open.spotify.com/ artist/6KxBixTtWRYyojmIvlFvjD
4. How does the process of recording a cover differ from recording an original song?
While I really love working on covers and taking my own spin on other artist’s songs, it’s a really special feeling to go into a session and work on something you created yourself. It’s an incredible feeling to see a song come to life.
5. Are there any similarities?
I’d say I’m glad I’ve done so many covers because it really helped me learn a lot about background vocals and how to layer things in a song. Analyzing what the original artists were doing in their tracks and finding cool unique ways for my covers helped me figure out what I like to do in my own music.
6. What’s it like being a musician on YouTube, and how do you think that has influenced your career?
It’s honestly all I know and it’s been amazing! When I started my channel almost 7 years ago (crazy!!) I was just super excited to post old choir videos and get feedback. Never in a million years would I have expected it to grow into what it is today, but I’m extremely grateful. My alinators are so supportive of me, in covers and original music, and I think because they found me on the internet it has given me a stronger bond with my fans. It’s helped me reach people all over the world that I wouldn’t have been able to without Youtube and social media.
7. What’s your favorite part of the creative process?
ALL OF IT! Haha. I think writing sessions and performances are probably my two favorite parts of this industry though. Writing is so cathartic and amazing – it allows me to express myself and get things off my chest that I may not have been able to do with just words. Performing gives you the chance to connect with people face to face. I can’t put into words how surreal that feeling is.
8. You’ve done some traveling during your career – have those experiences influenced your writing at all?
Oh absolutely. The more experiences I’ve had the more I have to write about. Traveling is also a great way to get you out of your day to day and give you some perspective on life.
9. Any crazy traveling stories?
I went to London for the first time to work with some people out there and ended up falling onto broken glass and cutting open my finger. It was my first time in the hospital since I was a baby and I was with literally one friend in a foreign country – pretty crazy and scary! I think it helped me realize that I was able to handle things like that on my own without my family with me, which was good to find out.
10. Where would you like to see yourself in 5 years?
I would really love to be able to do more touring – hopefully all over the globe. I want to be making and releasing more and more original songs for my alinators!
1. Favorite cover you’ve ever recorded?
The first cover I ever recorded in a studio was “Somewhere” by Barbara Streisand.
2. Any dream collaborations?
Katy Perry, Rihanna, Justin Bieber, Christina Aguilera, Zedd!
3. East Coast or West Coast?
EAST! NYC is my favorite.
4. If you could go back in time to any live performance, who would you see?
The Beatles. Or Woodstock!
5. Current favorite fellow YouTuber?
I have so many!! Two of my best friends are super talented Youtube musicians as well – Savannah Outen & Caitlin Hart 🙂
