Our Artist of the Week is Capital North, a hard rock duo from California. Get to know the band with our exclusive interview with guitarist/vocalist Jonathan Farrar
- Can you introduce yourself to those who may not know you?
Hello, my name is Jonathan Farrar and I play guitar for Capital North!
- How would you describe your music to people who have never heard it before?
This is always a tough one, but I would say our music is a visually-driven progressive indie-core. That’s a mouthful
- What are you looking forward to most in 2018?
I think we are most looking forward to touring and being able to really immerse ourselves amongst our fans… it’s a very different experience and so much more personal, and, honestly, it’s something that we value so highly. We are stoked to meet all of you and rock out together!
- Who are your musical influences?
Another tough one! We have so many musical influences, however, I would say some of the biggest ones as of late would be… Circa Survive, Dance Gavin Dance, Good Tiger, Sigur Rós, Periphery, Post Malone… man the list goes on and on!
- What about nonmusical influences?
I would have to say our biggest nonmusical influence would be Mother Nature. We try to get out to the wilderness as much as we can to reflect on what is truly important to us in this world. As a band, we really love to hike, camp, explore, and spend time immersed in nature!
- If you could collaborate with any musician, who would it be and why?
There are so many great musicians we would love to collaborate with, however, if we had to choose just one we would probably go with Circa Survive as they have been one of our favorite bands for many many years. But on second thought, I would really love to collaborate with someone like Ryan Gosling to make something super dark like Dead Man’s Bones. Also, John Baldwin Gourley of Portugal. The Man. Dang, this is hard!
- What do you hope fans get from your music?
We really hope that our fans can find hope and inspiration through our music and most of all that they can relate to our songs and lyrics in their own personal way as they pertain to their lives. We always encourage our listeners to apply our lyrics to their own struggles or experiences. We like to craft our lyrics in this way so that they are based on our personal experiences but are open to interpretation.
- Tell us a little bit about your new EP, Sea to Sky?
Our EP has really been such a long process which ironically reflects many of the very issues we discuss on the album; birth to death and everything that happens in between. It almost feels like the making of the EP was a complete lifecycle including all of the emotions and struggles one might go through from birth to death. The EP doesn’t necessarily follow a strict storyline, but more of a theme. “Sea To Sky” was just released on March 2nd, and we have been so overwhelmed with the response we have received so far. If you haven’t already, please go check it out, and let us know what you think or feel, or how it applied to some part of your life!
- What is something that you’ve accomplished so far in your career that you are most proud of?
We’ve had many of our fans reach out to us and share some amazing stories of how they have been able to relate to the many different themes in our music and how we have helped them find some hope and that is quite possibly the very best feeling or accomplishment. We just strive to inspire people and let them know that no matter what happens in life, there is always hope. Other than that, I would have to say that our EP release show in Los Angeles was pretty epic!
- What is a song you wish you wrote and why?
Hmmmm that’s a really tough one.. I would have to say “Go Your Own Way” by Fleetwood Mac, because honestly, we live by that message, and the song is just so darn catchy. We really love that song… maybe we will cover it… or maybe not? Stay tuned.
- Coffee or Tea?
Coffee for sure (third wave only, none of that Folgers stuff my Grandpa makes!)! There are few things in his world we love more than coffee J. Nothing against tea though!
- Current obsession song?
That’s hard to say as our obsessions seem to change from day to day. I would say “Psycho” by Post Malone would be on the top of the list today, literally on repeat!
- Favorite TV Show?
My currently obsession would be Mr. Robot, I honestly do not know how it took me so dang long to get into it… amazing show!
- Ocean or Pool?
100% pool, the ocean is a little scary, you know cuz of sharks, jellyfish, aliens, stingrays and stuff…
- Favorite movie?
Terminator, Predator, wait maybe Kindergarten Cop… actually any movie with Arnold. Also, any movie with Ryan Gosling, I like him a lot too.
