Get to know Artist of the Week Someya, a singer-songwriter from California. Check out her Q&A with Beyond the Stage below!
1. Can you introduce yourself to those who may not know you?
I’m a singer/songwriter from Northern California. I’m 16 years old and an artist in all senses of the word. Also, my favorite color is pastel blue.
2. How would you describe your music to people who have never heard it before?
I like to describe it as alt-pop. I’ve got electric guitar vibes, an ethereal feel and heartfelt lyrics in all the songs. I’m very much someone who values the words in a song as much as the melody.
3. What are you looking forward to most in 2018?
I’m going to a lot of concerts this summer and I’m really excited. I’m also going to be working on another music video which is going to be so cool.
4. Who are your musical influences?
It really depends on the day and what mood I’m in. I listen to a lot of Lana Del Rey and Halsey.
5. What about nonmusical influences?
In my every day life, I find Halsey really inspiring. She isn’t afraid to speak up and stand for what she believes in and be herself. She’s also really kind to her fans and down-to-earth. I think it’s very important to not let the attention and fame get to your head and just be a good person. I think she embodies that well.
6. If you could collaborate with any musician, who would it be and why?
So many people. I’d love to do a song with Charlie Puth. I think he’s an incredible musician, and I really respect his production skills, especially since mine are practically non-existent. I’d also want to do a song with Billie Eilish. Her voice is really pretty and I’m someone who loves to harmonize. I think we could come up with a beautiful duet.
7. What do you hope fans get from your music?
I know that music is a different experience for everyone. When I listen to music I really like, it puts me in a place I can’t experience elsewhere. It brings out different emotions and really makes me feel something. It’s like being high with music as the drug. It brings meaning to me. When I hear beautiful harmonies and words, especially when they’re edgy and different, they put me in a place nothing else can. It makes me feel like I belong. If I can be that for my fans, then I’ve done my job.
8. Tell us a little bit about your song, “Gold?”
It’s a love song with a hint of insanity. I’m singing about a relationship with the perfect person. It’s to the point of unhealthy possessiveness. The expectations are unrealistic, so I decided to encapsulate this in my music video by using a gold mannequin to demonstrate my “boyfriend”. He’s so perfect, he’s literally a gigantic doll. Another theme throughout the song is the lyric “I won’t let him leave”. It’s possessive to the point of showcasing an insecurity and saying “everyone leaves so please don’t let it be you too”. This song is partially comedic because of the clinginess and other lines like “Boys can be so boring, all they do is sit and whine.” Yet, it actually feels very personal to me. It’s so hard to find the right person. Sometimes, it feels hopeless, and it’s easier imagining ‘the one’.
9. What is something that you’ve accomplished so far in your career that you are most proud of?
There’s a lot I’ve yet to do and I know I have a long road ahead of me, however I’ve released an EP and a couple singles along with music videos for them. I’ve also performed at different venues and I think I’m just proud that I’ve made it this far. I’m pursuing my dream, and I’m happy I get to do what I love.
10. What is a song you wish you wrote and why?
There are so many beautiful songs out there. Idontwannabeyouanymore by Billie Eilish definitely sticks out to me. However, I think the songs that I love couldn’t have been done by anyone other than the original artists themselves. They make their own music sound beautiful and I don’t think anyone else can replicate the emotion and what makes these songs so unique.
THIS OR THAT
11. Coffee or Tea? Both, it depends on my mood.
12. Current obsession song? The Dare by Sofi Tukker and Like Heaven by Zolita. These two are always on repeat.
13. Favorite TV Show? So many, but Friends is an all-time favorite.
14. Ocean or Pool? Ocean.
15. Favorite movie? Silver Linings Playbook and Ratatouille are two of my favorites.
