Mandy from Artist of the Week Savvy and Mandy reflects on the duo’s career so far. Check it out below:
Ever since I was born, I have always loved to sing. That’s all I ever wanted to do all day, every day. I used to put on shows for my family (probably way too many), and I even have a distinct memory of me at the age of 3 getting up on top of a table at California Pizza Kitchen to sing “My Heart Will Go On” by Celine Dion. Savvy, on the other hand, was a little more shy growing up. Though she loved to sing, she was always nervous about doing it in front of anyone. Savvy wanted to be a veterinarian. She has such a kind heart and a love for animals. She wanted to help them in any way she could… until she saw Eddie Murphy’s Doctor Doolittle. Remember the scene towards the end of the movie when he performs surgery on a tiger? Yeah, Savvy was not a fan of that part. Even though she loves to help animals, she couldn’t imagine actually performing surgery on one, so she decided to change career paths. Savvy grew out of her shy stage and got into modeling and acting at the age of 9. She became the number one booker at LA Models. Her passion inspired me, and about a year after she started, I started acting and modeling as well! We had a lot of fun with it and got to work with some amazing people and brands.
Later, when I was 9 and Savvy was 11, we saw an audition notice looking for girls’ ages 15 and up for a new musical group. Even though we were too young for what they were casting for, we decided to go for it and audition anyways for fun! We went in, sang our hearts out, did an embarrassing dance routine we made up and had a blast. A few hours after the audition, we received a call from the managers we auditioned in front of and they told us they wanted to start a whole new project around Savvy & I and completely scrap the one they were auditioning for. We couldn’t be more excited. Finally, our dreams of becoming singers was being set in motion.
We began learning the entire ins-n-outs of the music industry, including how to properly structure songs and put on a show. It eventually lead to us going on tour all over the US, getting radio play, having multiple songs placed in TV shows and movies, and building up our amazing fan base. As we grew older, we felt a natural shift towards the country music genre. We decided to move to Nashville to immerse ourselves in the culture and be surrounded by music 24/7. We were writing every day with different writers, going to a bunch of shows to hear other artists, and performing all around town. We really found our sound in Nashville and everything just felt right immediately. We knew that this was where we were meant to be. Country music is who we are.
Our new single “Wildfire,” out on May 25th, symbolizes a new chapter for us. The song is about knowing who you are and what you want, and I feel like that mirrors Savvy & I. We cannot wait for everyone to hear “Wildfire”, and our new EP releasing later in the year. We are incredibly thankful for all of the experiences that we’ve been through, even all of the ups and the downs. The tough times teach you to be stronger and they help you realize what you truly want. Singing, songwriting, and performing… that is what we want to do. And we will always continue to chase our dream.
