Almondmilkhunni dropped the official music video for her new single, “damnboy” on July 31st.
“…the song talks about qualities I’m trying to manifest in my next person.” – Almondmilkhunni
BTS: How would you describe your sound to someone who’s never listened to you before?
Almondmilkhunni: My sound is pretty Pop and R&B-influenced, especially with living in Philly.
BTS: What are/who are some inspirations for your music?
Almondmilkhunni: Definitely older R&B heavily influences me as an artist. “Grapefruit” is very Cassie, “Me & U” vibes. I’m very influenced by Cassie, Alina Baraz, TLC, Rihanna, Summer Walker. Ctrl by SZA.
BTS: Congrats on releasing your new single “damnboy”! Tell me about the song, the process of making the song, and the inspiration behind it.
Almondmilkhunni: Thank you! I couldn’t come to LA because COVID-19, so I recorded it in Lil Uzi Vert’s studio in Philly. The way that I see it, I’m not in a relationship, but the song talks about qualities I’m trying to manifest in my next person.
BTS: You also released a music video for “damnboy”. It’s your second official music video – what’s it like on set?
Almondmilkhunni: Tyler Yee directed it and his energy is so contagious. He made it so fun. My whole crew is who I’m friends with. We pulled up early making margaritas in the desert. It was a blast! The energy radiates. My designer’s good friend also stars in the music video. I like the “in-house” crew. I like to keep it more personal.
BTS: Where did your musical journey start for you?
Almondmilkhunni: I kept music to myself. I was in college taking classes by day, and in the club by night. I guess I describe it almost as a “mid-life crisis”- go to law school or figure music out. I didn’t know how I had the courage. It was pretty remarkable. You have to do it first and think about it later. If you overthink it, you won’t do it.
BTS: What have you been up to in quarantine?
Almondmilkhunni: Getting into learning more about making music on my own. Producing in Logic Pro X and cutting my own records just for fun. I like doing Indie music on the side and house beats. I want to learn the technical side of my craft. I knew I just needed to do it and quarantine gave me the time to do it.
BTS: What is something readers should about you?
Almondmilkhunni: I’m an open book. I’ve had a following on Twitter because I’ve been very open about my life when I was a dancer and being in college. Most people know my story. If you don’t, follow me on Twitter!
BTS: What does the rest of 2020 and beyond look like for you?
Almondmilkhunni: Really just taking it back a little music-wise and figuring out myself and my sound. It’s my first year of being signed; I’m just starting out. There are some strong records on the way. I’m figuring out who Almondmilkhunni is. People will definitely be able to hear the shifts in the creative direction. It’ll be cool!
