After a few years away from the spotlight, battling both physical and mental illnesses, Selena Gomez is finally back. With her latest album, Gomez is conquering the world and sharing more of her hopes, fears and honesty.
In Rare, the truth comes out even more. A perfectly built, cohesive piece of music, the album has everything from ballads to singles. Combining the talent of songwriters like Julia Michaels and Jon Bellion, the singer’s latest release is strong, genuine and feels like a logical step forward.
Starting off strong, Selena Gomez opens the album with the title track, which sets a precedent for what’s to come. As one of the strongest tracks on the album, Gomez sings, “It feels like you don’t care / Oh, why don’t you recognize I’m so rare?” over a bopping beat that almost places a visual in listeners’ minds for a potential music video or live performance.
Although the album moves forward with two of the singles, “Look At Her Now,” And “Lose You To Love Me,” Rare feels brand new throughout the entire album. Most importantly, the album is a fresh perspective on pop music and continues to make waves. Already hitting the charts, getting massive radio play and earning spots on coveted playlists, the entire album is showing that Gomez is here to stay and is battling what drove her away from the public eye in the first place.
With thirteen tracks, Rare is a strong mix of both upbeat and ballads, which creates a perfect balance of emotion and radio-friendly tracks. A standout track, “Vulnerable” is unexpected and different. In an interview with Jimmy Fallon, Gomez shared that the track is one of her favorites on the album and that she hopes to be an inspiration for others who might be in the same situation, whether it’s a friendship, a relationship or other situation.
Vocally, Gomez sounds strong and confident, showing that negative criticism can’t influence who she is or what she creates. Although we haven’t heard from Gomez as far as new music in quite some time, it’s definitely apparent that she’s back and ready for what comes next. Rare is a cohesive body of work that almost feels “rare” in pop music and is clearly going to be a favorite for listeners in 2020.
