Yes, you read that right. AC/DC is back, ready to rock and sounding as electric as ever.
AC/DC released its latest single, “Shot in The Dark” on Oct. 7, commencing the road to the band’s 17th studio album, POWER UP. Having formed in 1973 in Sydney, Australia, 2020 marks the rock band’s sixth decade of being active. For a band that has been making music for more than twice my lifespan, the song does not sound dated or lethargic at all. In fact, if one were to slip it in any of the band’s “prime” albums, it would fit right in and no one would notice.
POWER UP is the first album since 2008’s Black Ice to incorporate the band’s best-known lineup. The band’s 2014 album, Rock or Bust, was co-written by Malcolm Young, who did not appear on the recordings due to his declining health, eventually passing away in 2017 due to dementia.
Malcolm Young’s legacy continues to shine on through the band’s music. Even after his death, he continues to influence AC/DC’s music, leaving behind a number of unrecorded songs that he co-wrote with his younger brother, Angus. He is credited as being the writer on all 12 tracks of POWER UP.
2018 gave rise to conversations about reuniting the original lineup for a new album, bringing back singer Brian Johnson and bassist Cliff Williams, both of whom departed in 2016 due to pressing health issues; and drummer Phil Rudd, who was sidelined due to legal trouble he found himself in. Rounding up the quintet would be Stevie Young, filling in for his uncle Malcolm.
“Shot in The Dark” features everything that is unmistakably AC/DC. From Angus Young’s powerful electric guitar riffs to Rudd’s crash of the drums and Johnson’s howling of cheeky lyrics — it’s unfiltered rock and roll, served up just how AC/DC likes it.
POWER UP will release Nov. 13. It will be available in multiple formats, including digital, CD and deluxe versions. The limited-edition deluxe POWER UP package will include a light-up box with built-in speakers that play a portion of “Shot in The Dark” as well as a 20-page booklet.
