IT HAPPENED! After years of the 5sos fam begging the dudes to release their old stuff (many fan favorites), the day has finally come. Yesterday (12/3/2016), in celebration of the band’s fifth year together, 5 Seconds of Summer released all of the extra B-sides and rarities on Spotify and iTunes. At their current standings in the overall Top Albums list on iTunes, the Somewhere New EP is #14, Unplugged EP is #16, She’s Kinda Hot EP is #18, Don’t Stop EP is #23, 5 Seconds of Summer (B-Sides) is #43, She Looks So Perfect (B-Sides) is #49, and Sounds Good Feels Good (B-Sides) is #76. This is certainly an indication of how important this band truly is to its fanbase. As fans of 5sos for quite a while, we’ve compiled a list of our favorite underrated songs. Check out the list below:
“Disconnected”
Co-written with Alex Gaskarth of All Time Low, this is one of the most versatile songs from the band’s first few EP releases. Though it never made an album, it quickly became a fan favorite. The melodic guitar riff and groovy bass line have you dancing throughout the entire song – not to mention the background gang vocals on the “oh’s” that translates beautifully in the live show. To top off this already great song, the sweet-sounding lyrics make it even better: “You are my getaway, you are my favorite place.” Thanks, guys, we feel the same.
“Story Of Another Us”
Co-written by Luke Hemmings (vocals/guitar) and Josh Ramsay of Mariana’s Trench, the song references an ending relationship. Using film as a metaphor, you feel the heartache of “memories are pay-per-view, it costs too much to think of you.” What sticks out the most is the strong chorus – it’s like a punch in the face of power chords with an accompanying string section. The sudden burst of energy dissolves nicely into the build up of the bridge, making this song a pleasant listen all the way through. Maybe one day they’ll add it to a setlist? (We’re hoping so…)
“Wherever You Are”
At first listen, it’s a sad love song. It’s not being able to stop thinking about that person you’re supposed to be done with. You wonder where they are, what they’re doing, and why they’re not with you right now. “It always will be you,” is the phrase that repeats throughout the track. However, the reason this song holds more weight is because of its relation to the band and its fanbase. When 5sos released “Wherever You Are” in 2013, they dedicated it entirely to the fans. This song exists because of the incredible connection between the boys and their audience and that’s why it’s so special. Not to mention, it’s a solid song about heartache and it’s certainly relatable.
