Music can define a specific time in life – and that’s exactly how we feel about songs from middle school. It was the soundtrack playing in the morning as you threw on your Etnies and Hollister t-shirt for school. It was the iconic gems that your 13 year-old self blasted in the car as your parents drove you and your friends to the mall. It’s the songs that feel like growing up. To us, these are a few songs that feel like growing up:
-
Fall Out Boy – “Dance, Dance”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C6MOKXm8x50
Were you even in middle school if you didn’t hear this song at the 7th grade dance? With Fall Out Boy releasing new music, it’s cool to hear the drastic change from the band’s first releases. This song was punk enough for the emo kids to enjoy, but pop enough for everyone else to jam to.
-
3OH!3 – “Don’t Trust Me”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdB3Oyd5HtU
The song that, though you’re not sure why or how, you know every single word to. It was the edgy song to play on bus rides. Or when you had your friends over on Fridays for a sick night of eating pizza and drinking Sprite (we still do this, honestly…).
-
Metro Station – “Shake It”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wjFahULCK8
A true bop of a chorus that, to this day, is probably still stuck in your head. It was another song, like “Dance, Dance” that was a staple to middle school parties. Bonus points if you and your friends made up a dance to the verses (not saying we did this… but we totally did).
-
Hellogoodbye – “Here (In Your Arms)”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LSAECj0GXWQ
This song just had to be on your Myspace profile. And everyone in your Top 8 knew it, too. Hellogoodbye gave us the love song we didn’t know we needed. Who broke our hearts? Why did this song make us so emotional? We’ll never know. But it was legendary.
-
Owl City – “Fireflies”
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=psuRGfAaju4
The song that broke your replay button on iTunes. It’s one of the most iconic choruses that if you heard it 30 years from now, you’d still remember it. It’s the song that feels like your first crush and all the fireflies you felt in your stomach because of it. See what we did there? Thought you might!
