Released in 1995, this cult film is the epitome of the 90’s style and shows off the popular music culture of the 90’s. It follows the employees of Empire Records, an independent music store, as they try to save the store from being taken over by a larger chain while simultaneously running the store through its day-to-day operations. This is definitely a must-see for fans of movies like Clueless, Heathers, and Legally Blonde and fans of music alike.

Whiplash is centered around Andrew, a jazz drummer who, in a conservatory is faced with the challenge of dealing with his terrifying instructor. Andrew is extremely ambitious which turns the drama into feeling like a thriller. This is a story about a young man riddled with obsession and frustration that shows the highs and lows of artistic desires. This movie won multiple Academy Awards in 2015 so if you’re looking for a serious drama, this is for you.
- Fresh Dressed
Fresh Dressed is a fascinating documentary that ties together the growth of hip hop and the growth of streetwear. You may recognize some of the cast, which includes Pharrell Williams, “Puffy” Combs, Kanye West, A$AP Rocky, and more. There’s an old-school hip-hop soundtrack to this one (obviously) which makes it feel less documentary and more snazzy and mesmerizing.
- Begin Again
Begin Again is a sappy romantic comedy that follows Gretta (Keira Knightley) as she breaks ties with her boyfriend, Dave (Adam Levine), and finds herself artistically. Greta is picked up by an ex record executive, Dan (Mark Ruffalo), and they immediately start working on the next great collaboration. This is a simple story that is beautifully done and a must-watch for any music fan in the mood for a lighthearted movie.
- Straight Outta Compton
Straight Outta Compton is a drama that shows the true story behind the group N.W.A. and their cultural and social revolution. The movie takes an interesting stance on how N.W.A. formed the music culture and what happened behind the scenes with N.W.A. versus the music business. This was a very highly talked about movie in 2015, and if you haven’t seen it yet you’re missing out on a thrilling true story.
