Every year, whether it’s outlandish, insane, musically outstanding or even something else, the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) have us sitting on the edge of our chairs for the entire show.
This year, from music video premieres to incredible pyrotechnics, the VMAs did not disappoint. We saw Fifth Harmony literally throw an old member off stage to an incredible tribute to suicide survivors and so much in between.
Here are our 5 favorite moments from the 2017 MTV VMAs.
-
- Kendrick Lamar’s Opening Performance
From a man literally on fire to dancers scaling a flaming wall, the DAMN. rapper set an incredibly high bar right off the bat. Accompanied by a strobing light show and Lamar’s powerful music, the opening performance already has more than 1.7 million views on YouTube.
- Logic Performs “1-800-273-8255 With Alessia Cara and Khalid
Logic, Alessia Cara and Khalid performed their chart-topping hit, “1-800-273-8255,” not only with a string orchestra, but with a choir filled with suicide survivors. Logic’s speech also empowered more than a 50% increase in calls to the suicide hotline overnight. The performance sparked a trend on Twitter, with most users claiming that it was incredibly moving and powerful.
- Taylor Swift Premiered the “Look What You Made Me Do” Music Video
Returning to music after a short break, Taylor Swift released the first single off of her upcoming album, Revenge, at the end of last week. Just days later, Swift revealed the music video for the single, which hinted at Swift’s future and past. Most notably, the video depicts Swift in every past thematic costume for each of her previous releases.
- Fifth Harmony Literally Kicked Their Former Member Off The Stage
Female pop-quartet, Fifth Harmony sparked controversy on Facebook and Twitter with their shocking performance, which began by throwing a “dummy” version of their former fifth member, Camila Cabello off of the stage. The group also performed under waterfall and finished the performance with a mic drop. Let’s just say that even Bebe Rexha can’t stop screaming about it either.

- DNCE and Rod Stewart Threw a Rooftop Party
Yes, you read that right. DNCE performed in an ultra-cool, 70s disco throwback, even complete with a performance from star performer, Rod Stewart. The track, “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy,” was a perfect upbeat, danceable track for the VMAs. Note: This performance did in fact include Joe Jonas with a mustache, no, you cannot shave it for later.
