Reinvention can mean a lot of different things, but in the music world it can mean the rise or the fall of an entire career. Artists are constantly reinventing their look, their sound, even the way they are portrayed on social media. Reinvention can be scary because, like change, it’s not always a good thing. We compiled a list of 5 artists that are nailing it when it come to reinventing themselves.
- The 1975
The 1975 disappeared for 24 hours before simply changing the color of signature logo. Going from black and white to bright pinks and blues, threw a lot of fans for a loop, but with a simple change in hue The 1975 marked the beginning of a new era and the start of their reinvention. With their debut album chock full of powerful tunes that defined this band, a reinvention didn’t seem necessary before the release of their second album. The 1975 have been around for years, but we were just getting to know them. With suspense and anticipation their sophomore album, with the worlds longest title, was released. The 1975 changed their sound and embraced themselves as a pop rock band with 80s influences. It was different, but it was great. The 1975 grew into their sound with this reinvention and as for us fans, we got used to wearing pink instead of black.
- Britney Spears
Let’s completely change gears and talk about Britney. She’s been around for as long as we can remember and like any artist, went through some rough patches. With her most recent album Britney proves that you can change, change and change again and still come out on top. With very little change in the sound of her music, the reinvention with all within Britney herself. She looks better then ever, has grown into a style that works for her, and she’s making music that we can tell she enjoys singing. Sometimes an artist reinvention is all about happiness and if Britney’s happy, we’re happy.
- Nicki Minaj
Our darling Nicki, an artist that has been testing the reinvention waters since the moment she was put into the spotlight. Instead of talking through Nicki’s reinvention, the proof is in the picture.
Nicki is an unpredictable talent who is constantly reinventing herself for the better and we cannot wait to see what she does next.
- Nick Jonas
Nick Jonas should be the poster child for getting better with age. Many of us grew up knowing Nick as the youngest Jonas brother and when the 2000s boy band broke up there was know way of knowing if any of the boys would make their way back into the limelight. Luckily, Nick didn’t stay away for long forming his own band post JoBros and eventually becoming a solo artist and a phenomena all on his own. His most recent album, Last Year was Complicated, proved that with a bit of reinventing you can create something special. Nick Jonas proved himself as a solid talent and thankfully he’ll be around for much longer. Jonas Brother fans everywhere thank you for sticking around, Nick.
- Lady Gaga
Would a list compiling artists reinventions be complete without the queen herself, Lady Gaga. We’ve seen Gaga reinvent herself constantly, album after album, hit after hit, she is always different and she is always good. With the current announcement of her new album Joanne, we are seeing a stripped down Gaga. From the looks of it fans will be getting an album of solid hits and Gaga sounding amazing, per usual. Less crazy costumes, more beautiful vocals. You have our attention Gaga and we can’t wait to see what you come up with this time.
Change can be scary, but reinvention is a good thing. Embrace the change and allow your favorite artists to explore. Just think if anything goes wrong, they can only get better!
