Baby she’s back! Nearly five years after releasing her fourth studio album Skin & Earth, Canadian synth-pop legend Lights is back with a new album PEP and a tour to go along with it. PEP shows Lights giving herself a pep talk with an energetic collection of songs that feature dreamy synths, roaring guitars, scream-worthy melodies, and some of the most empowered lyrics of her career. On Sunday night, Portland fans were transported into the colorful world of PEP at the opening night of the “Baby I’m Back Tour” at the Roseland Theater. The theater was packed full of Lights fans ready to hear songs from PEP live for the first time, as well as hear classics from the rest of Lights’ discography – and she didn’t disappoint.
Throughout the show, Lights touched on every era of her decade plus long career. The show opened with the blistering PEP single “Prodigal Daughter” followed by the bouncy “Ice”, a fan favorite track from Lights’ debut album The Listening. The excitement from the crowd when “Ice” started was unmistakable, and hearing Lights and the crowd scream “baby I’m back!” together during “Prodigal Daughter” proved the depth of connection she has with her fans.
The show continued with standout tracks from Lights’ discography like “Siberia”, “New Fears, “Dead End”, and “Running with the Boys.” It was abundantly clear just how happy Lights was to be performing these song – and how happy she was to be performing at all. Towards the end of the show, there was a moment when she appeared speechless, perhaps overwhelmed by the occasion. Given that this is her first tour in years, you could feel the joy and appreciation radiating from every fiber of Lights’ being. Not only was the show a display of Lights as dynamic performer and vocalist, but a display of love towards live music and connecting with an audience. It was a perfect way to kickoff the “Baby I’m Back” tour and we’re so happy we got to experience it!
