You’ve heard PUBLIC’s song “Make You Mine” whether you know it or not. If it was in passing, you probably felt its infectious rhythm. Fans of TikTok know it has become one of their favorite songs.
The song has over 4 billion global streams and made the band social media kings. It is certified gold. Now they are riding that wave to a newfound turn in their career.
PUBLIC releases their new single “Little Drama Queen” on Friday. Here are three things to know about the track
1. They are getting serious
Not everything the band has released is about romance or carries a poppy sound. They want to hit broodier territory. “Little Drama Queen” still has the tempo that fans expect from PUBLIC. However, it explores tones and instruments that create a darker flare.
“It’s upbeat dark,” says Matthew Alvarado, who plays bass and synth for the trio.
His instrumentation takes a front seat on the single. The bassline is fabulous, and singer John Vaughn’s chorus is complimented by Alvarado’s use of blaring synth.
As an act that has opened for Walk the Moon and their fellow Ohioans Twenty One Pilots, the group is now showing they are ready to make some noise for themselves. They have experience under their belts with a top-hit of their own. This single proves that they are paving the way for more future success. It shows that they are artists who are trying to continue to grow.
2. It is a disco-pop anthem
PUBLIC is not a band that conforms to one genre or style. Their musical abilities allow them to explore whatever they want and do it well.
“I don’t get nervous about changing up our sound,” says drummer Ben Lapps. “It’s always gonna sound like PUBLIC because we always put our fingerprints all over it. To me, this is a fun new direction.”
So when the band tried to piggyback off of the current wave of pop-rock and instead came out of the studio with something more disco sounding, they weren’t upset or surprised.
And while the band is ready for their own spotlight, they still dream of who they would open for. Sticking with the disco theme, Lapps dream would be to open for Nile Rodgers. The legendary musician is best known for being a founding member of CHIC and producing the legendary Sister Sledge record We Are Family.
It may be help to think of these inspirations while listening to “Little Drama Queen,” because the influence has helped continue to revolutionize that PUBLIC sound.
3. They cannot wait to play it live.
A huge draw of PUBLIC’s appeal is their remarkable live performances. While they have had to put live shows on pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they are looking forward to taking “Little Drama Queen” for a live audience.
“We were a live-performing band,” laughs Vaughn. “And we will be again. But that’s what we love to do. And maybe that does influence us wanting to write more hype tracks, but I love dark broody music.”
That is what fans can expect as they tune into PUBLIC’s new anticipated single.
As time stretches along they are finding ways to dig deeper into themselves.
The writers who gained fame from fans on the internet are taking music and they are making it theirs.
